Forage
harvesters - hay
|
|
Although usually consumed fresh, forage crops may be harvested in several ways for storage
and future use. The type of harvesting depends on many factors such as species, use, local conditions, machinery,
logistics...:

|
Hay (sun drying)
Hay is the most common, partly because many crops suit its production,
it can supply the nutrient requirements of most classes of livestock,
and it can be cheap to make. It is well adapted to arid areas where
its quality is not jeopardized by rain. However, other curing and
handling conditions can affect hay quality (raking, baling) and
its production can sometimes create quite a headache, especially
for alfalfa (leaves may easily be lost during the operation). If
swathing, raking may not be a problem with good timing for baling
and the use of appropriate machines.

Hay quality - affecting
factors
Hay quality is affected by different factors as resumed by Bates:
- Plant species
- Stage of maturity
- Curing and handling conditions
- Soil fertility
- Seed quality
This means that apart from harvest managment
(see alfalfa), after mowing operations
must be carefully executed to avoid quality loss.
