Our selection of garlic varieties is based on
local trials

Garlic
(Allium sativum) is a perennial bulbous plant which has been
produced worldwide for many years. You will thus find various kinds
and varieties among which it is sometimes difficult to find the
appropriate one. Each type is indeed very specific to a growing
area. The only way to have a successful crop (i.e yield - good multiplication
rate - and quality) is to locally test potentially interesting
varieties. Since ICS's first days, trials have been conducted with
seeds from Mexico, China, France etc. French white varieties such
as:
- Thermidrôme,
- Messidrôme,
- Germidrôme
have
given outstanding results in Saudi Arabia (under pivot irrigation).
Genetic material from France has indeed proven it's quality by being
widely used around the world for breeding purposes.
Apart from selecting adapted varieties, it is essential to consider seed quality as well. Garlic
is a non-seedling plant whose propagation is exclusively vegetative. The cloves can carry many diseases (fungi,
nematodes etc.) which can not only damage the plant but render the soil unusable for further production of garlic
and related crops. Many publications insist on never growing onion or garlic crops following garlic to at least
reduce long term risks.
Based on the above considerations, ICS's know-how has been focused on variety trials and pest-free
planting stocks supply. Certified seeds are produced by French cooperatives selected by ICS.

Garlic types
Garlic types differ by the presence or the absence of seedstalks. Hardneck
garlic will produce a seedstalk which will for some varieties hold flowers
and topsets (small bulbs of no use for planting). Softneck garlic is the
most common and rarely, if ever, produces seedstalks.
Soil requirements
As onion, garlic can grow on many soil types. However, a good soil
structure is essential to avoid water stagnation as the fragile root
system makes the plant senstitive to water stress.
