 Integral weed management program -
Preemergence control

A NON CHEMICAL control is possible at this stage. We strongly recommend the use of the Väderstad Carrier which perfectly controls the working depth and performs a shallow cultivation that will avoid bringing deep weeds into the top soil layer. It will also facilitate an even weed emergence.

Before emergence (and stricktly then), different herbicides can be used such as Glyphosate (Round Up®, Rattler®, Glyphomax®...), diquat (Reglone®, Reward®...), paraquat (Gramoxone®, Cyclon®, Boa®...) or Glufosinate-ammonium. They won't damage the crop as long as applied with great care. Irrigation must be totally under control to avoid onion destruction even if germination is invisible. Water from irrigation or rain will drain the herbicides into the soil and damage the cotyledon, very fragile at this stage.

Postemergence control

 Broadleaf weeds
 Grass herbicides

To avoid damaging onions and get a good weeds coverage, use more water than usual : apply at least 400 l of water-chemical mix per hectare.

Control over broadleaf weeds

Different herbicides can be used. Click on each product name for detailed information.

Control over grass

For most grass herbicides, it is highly recommended to add an oil sticker (type Agral at 1 l/ha).
Different herbicides can be used. Click on each product name for detailed information.

Glyphosate : very common nonselective translocated herbicide sold under many names (mainly Round-Up). Inhibits protein synthesis. Rate of use : about 1000 g.a.i/ha, or 3 l of commercial product at 360 g.a.i/l.

Diquat : nonselective contact herbicide. Forms components which destroy living cells. Rate of use : 600 to 800 g.a.i/ha

Paraquat : nonselective contact herbicide totally soluble in water. The action mode is identical to diquat's. Rate of use : 600 to 800 g.a.i/ha.

Glufosinate-ammonium : total contact herbicide to be used at 750 g.a.i/ha

DCPA (chlorthal) : sold under various names (mainly Dacthal). Needs a very even application on the surface. Efficient against a number of grass and broadleaf weeds while very selective of onion which makes a big difference with other products. Rate of use : between 4500 and 9000 g a.i./ha.

Choose the right sprayer
Save money and get better result with a good sprayer properly adjusted : save up to 20-30% of the value of product applied which represents more than $ 20,000 per year!

Fertilization and onion
weed control

In onions, nitrogenous fertilizers such as ammonium nitrate, ammonium thiosulfate, or mixtures of urea and sulfuric acid applied when the plants have one true leaf will stimulate the growth of onion seedlings and increase their competitiveness with broadleaf weeds, which are burned back by the fertilizer.

Sethoxydim and fluazifop-P-butyl are effective in controlling small, annual grass seedlings and some perennial grasses. Their effectiveness is reduced when grasses are under moisture stress. Later growth stages of annual grasses are more difficult to control. Neither herbicide will control annual bluegrass. Clethodim effectively controls annual bluegrass along with most other grass species
