Success storiesOnion Madagascar 1997 - 2002 The introduction of new hybrid varieties of onion in Madagascar was done in cooperation with the French Development agency and Tahirisoa (a company based in Tulear). It has created a new flow of quality onion exports to neighbouring islands (Reunion, Mauritius...), and development continues. ICS has provided the know-how and finance for large scale trials of new varieties. Al Ghorayed, 1996 Ali Al Ghorayed is a very good farmer from Tabuk in Saudi Arabia, who had been growing wheat and forage crops for over 10 years, when he asked ICS to help him set up new crops the plan called for onions, potatoes and corn. Ali Al Ghorayed invested quite a large amount and after a few years now manages an operation that produces 5 000 tons of onions every year (2 000 tones are stored), and 5 000 tones of potatoes mainly for processing. Corn was given up because of low market prices but the yield reached over 10 tones per hectare the first season. ICS provided seeds, equipment and full time supervision of crops for the first season, enough to train Mr Al Ghorayed's staff.
"I started working with ICS in 1997
and quickly understood their value" When ICS entered the Sajir region of Arabia in 1997, no onions were grown there. A leading farmer of the area decided to try it for one year. The second year, after the first technical results had started to speak for themselves, a few more farmers came into the project and achieved yields as high as 90 tonnes per hectare. Not bad for farmers who had never grown onions before! This year, 28 farmers will grow onions with us! We brought real know-how, especially in weed control, as well as method and patience. " I made 36 000 $ Thanks to ICS's advice and expertise, this farmer took calculated risks which prouved successful. As a long time onion producer, he had a perfect knowledge of the management practices adapted to this crop. We therefore asked him to shift the sowing date of a part of his surface to an unusual period. The variety which we had recommended, Rio Bravo, prouved to be well adapted : average yield was about 90 tonnes/hectare, sold at 40 cents per kilo, a good operation altogether !
