Loosening rather than plowing

In soils that have never been cultivated, a soil profile is required. In these situations, tillage is rarely an appropriate solution: it inverts the surface and lower horizons leading to deterioration of soil structure and the loss of organic matter when the main objective is to maintain it at high levels.

ICS recommends

Instead of plowing we recommend the use of a specific subsoiler that perfectly preserves the vertical organization of the soil, while creating faults and fracturing it across the width of the profile.

Roots can therefore explore and use all profile elements (water, nutrients), and the infiltration of water is improved. In addition, a tine subsoiler brings up very few clods to the surface and does not clutter the seedbed with large lumps (unlike other subsoiler types which can bring up large clods of clay).
